Crash for Cash Fraud, protecting your fleet - James Heath, director of counter fraud strategy - Published 6th Jun 2008

Fraud involving staged road accidents is becoming increasingly common and, having emerged in the North West in the nineties, the practice has now spread right across the UK. James Heath discusses the risks to drivers, the costs to fleet owners and what can be done to combat this type of fraud.

Research by the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) indicates that, from 1999 to 2006, more than 22,500 staged and induced motor accidents took place in the UK.

Fraudsters adopt various methods, all of which involve them performing unexpected and unnecessary manoeuvres to cause innocent drivers to crash into them. Several claims are then made to the victim's insurer, often including not just damage to the fraudster's vehicle, but also fictitious injuries sustained by driver and passengers.
