Cheaper home insurance for green properties - Published 20th Nov 2009

Splashing out on eco-friendly property tweaks could help save customers the cost of going through the claims handling process.

Lord Adair Turner, chairman of the climate change committee, urged people to take "a whole house approach" and invest in making their home greener.

There are plenty of ways people can make their homes more eco-friendly, from choosing an efficient boiler and adding insulation to installing double glazing and cavity wall fillings, he added.

Such alterations are not only good for the environment – they can also lead to savings on bills and home insurance premiums – for instance, double glazing could make a house more secure.

But Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, suggested that: "Lord Turner is putting the cart before the horse a little bit here. Most people in the UK haven't even done the basics yet."

The Association of British Insurers recently suggested that home insurance may rise in cost due to climate change as flood and windstorm damage will lead to an increase in the number of people going through the claims handling process.ADNFCR-1565-ID-19470168-ADNFCR
