My working day

The first thing I do every day is check my inbox for legal research enquiries that have come overnight, and respond to fee earners directly with a likely time frame for completion of the research.

I trawl established current awareness sources every day e.g. Industry and Government websites, check RSS news-feeds and email alerts.  Any relevant legal developments are communicated to internal customers – for example, if the judgment in an asbestos PI case has been delivered by the Court of Appeal I send an email summary of the decision to Keoghs’ Disease team together with the full transcript and any related commentary.

I look after the day-to-day running of Keoghs’ Intranet. On a typical day this might involve tasks like updating a technical guidance page on CRU and benefits, adding a recently published social newsletter and creating an html webpage to the bespoke requirements of a content author.

There are legal research enquiries to complete every day. Tasks may include sourcing case law relevant to a set of facts; finding out whether a specific provision from an Act of parliament was in force on a specific historical date; obtaining a British Standard or book from the British Library.

The best part of my job is the absolute variety of work I encounter each day. I act as researcher, problem solver and, to new staff, a friendly introduction to life at Keoghs.

My career at Keoghs

I started at Keoghs in 2002 and, as well as attending to legal research enquiries, I quickly set about creating a computerised library database to catalogue paper and electronic titles.  As my role grew I became more involved with the delivery of current awareness services both to fee earners and to our insurance industry clients.

In 2006 I helped to develop and launch the firm’s new Intranet.  I played a significant part in the project team set up to replace the firm’s old system with a new purpose-built information portal.

I have presented ‘legal research skills’ training to fee earners and I also deliver a segment at every induction session explaining the information services available to staff.

Working at Keoghs

Keoghs has always been exemplary at recognising talented individuals at the firm, and rewarding achievement through the use of employee recognition schemes, both at team and departmental level.

Our hardworking Charity and Social committees help to forge a bond between the firm and local charitable enterprises and also between each employee.

The best part of my job is the absolute variety of work I encounter each day. I act as researcher, problem solver and, to new staff, as a friendly introduction to life at Keoghs. On top of that I get to put my creative skills to work designing web pages for the intranet.
